Scripting the MMC (active reporting)

Post4. Mar 2008, 11:58

Hello,

Some customers asked for active reporting features like mailing query results from within LOGINventory. As LOGINventory uses the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) which is “scriptable”, there is a simple way to get this done:

The approach is to create analysis (info or history queries) within LOGINventory dependent on your needs and export the results via a VB Script which may run as a scheduled task for example. After running the script you got a CSV file containing the data you want to know about and you may process it. Maybe you would like to import it to MS Excel as values for a diagram or maybe you want to mail it to someone.

We have created two examples to show how scripting works. These examples can be downloaded from http://www.loginter.net/downloads/LOGIN ... _Tools.zip
The archive contains the following files:

1. LOGINventory.vbs
This file contains “helper” methods to access, enumerate and expand nodes. Usually nothing has to be changed here.

2. report_mailser.wsf
This is an example on how to export the Microsoft query from the Analyse/Sample node and send the result via mail to a specified recipient. Note that Microsoft Outlook has to be installed on the computer running LOGINventory. Adjust it to your requirements.

3. license_mailer.wsf
This script enumerates all the software entries within the Software node, selects and exports all software entries that are out of license and mails the result to a specific recipient. Note that Microsoft Outlook has to be installed on the computer running LOGINventory. Adjust it to your requirements.

Please have a look inside the files and adjust the relevant values. These examples do work with Microsoft Management Console 2.0 only.
